Gene Messer Toyota can help you identify why your car or truck shakes when idling.
As a driver, one of the unnerving feelings is when you feel your vehicle vibrate when driving. Is it a tire puncture, did a giant pothole damage my suspension, or do I have a broken driveshaft? There are a few components that may be the culprit as to why the vehicle is vibrating, and the severity of the potential damage can fluctuate greatly. The most probable cause of the shaking generally occurs in the vicinity of your car’s tires and wheels. They connect the car to the road, and if anything is a bit wonky, you are going to notice. It might be something like a broken transmission mount or a broken caliper. These more serious component failures might leave you with a broken can on the side of the road.

If you recently got different wheels and tires, the car shaking could be from the wheels and tires that we not balanced correctly. Balancing the tires makes sure the weight of the tires and wheels are evenly distributed for the smoothest ride possible. If you feel the tire shaking while you are driving, it could be an unbalanced tire. If the tires and wheels are balanced, but your car is still shaking, ensure the tire pressure is correct, and be sure to check if the lugnuts are fully tightened and make sure the tire pressure is correct. If you find that your tires are the cause of the shake, you should have them looked at immediately.
If your vehicle shudders when you brake, that is a pretty strong signal that you should have the brakes checked out. The most obvious cause of your steering wheel shake is worn rotors. When you press the brake pedal, the brake pads squeeze the brake rotors to stop your car. If you want smooth braking, you need a smooth surface. A warped surface will cause shakes when braking, sort of like how a brick road feels bumpier than an asphalt highway. Other causes of the shaking include frozen brake calipers or damaged shocks. If you feel your steering wheel start to wobble, bring it to us, and we’ll check it out.
If the vehicle is shaking before you ever start driving, then you probably have broken parts. The most common reasons for your car shaking in idle are:
A Worn Driveshaft – If damaged or not perfectly balanced, it might cause shudders
Worn CV joints – Working in conjunction with the drive shaft, cv joints get the engine power to the wheels and, if broken, can be the cause of your vehicle shaking.
Engine Mounts That Are Failing – As the name suggests, these components help affix the engine to the vehicle. If they get broken or damaged, it can allow the engine to engine shake.
