Gene Messer Toyota can help you identify what causes your vehicle lights to flicker.
If you see your lights dimming while driving, it’s probably because of a failing battery. If your car battery is normal, there are other trouble spots that could be responsible for the issue. No matter the cause, it’s imperative that you have the problem diagnosed and fixed ASAP. When your lights aren’t working correctly, you could become a hazard to yourself and other drivers.
The three areas dimming car lights generally happen are:
Because the battery is the most convenient component to diagnose, this is where most of us will look first. If the battery is bad, bring it to us so we can diagnose the issue and get the specific parts for your vehicle. While most cases result from a failing battery, there are other factors to consider.

If the car battery is not the cause of your flickering car lights, it might be a bad bulb or a bad fuse. Failing bulbs are an easy fix and present an opportunity to upgrade to new LED bulbs.
If it’s a bad fuse, you could be dealing with a bigger problem than you had originally realized. A fuse dies when there is too much electricity runs through it. For example, if your anti-lock brakes are installed with a 10amp fuse, and the fuse gets more than 10amps of electricity, the fuse will fail. In this situation, your anti-lock brakes could fail due to the blown fuse. If you have a fuse that continues to fail, bring it in and we’ll accurately diagnose the larger, potentially more dangerous issue.
Lights flickering on your dash may also be signs your alternator is dying. Consider this, you start your vehicle with power from the battery, but the alternator supplies the power that keeps your vehicle running. If you drive an old car with halogen headlights, you may see them get dimmer with a dying alternator. For new cars with LED or HID lighting, they may flicker or stop working altogether.
A dying light switch, whether it’s the headlight switch or an interior dimmer, should also be checked out when you have flickering car lights. In some rare situations, just replacing a worn-out switch may solve the problem, especially in older cars or vehicles with excessive mileage. If your car is newer, there’s a possibility it could be a sign of a bigger issue with the electrical system.
Figuring out these concerns can feel overwhelming, so if you are experiencing any problems with the lights flickering on your car, bring it to us immediately. Our technicians will do a thorough diagnosis and provide you with options for fixing the flickering lights.
